Hang Nga Guesthouse and Gallery may be the official name of this extraordinary piece of urban architecture, but you won’t find any locals calling it any name other than Crazy House. And Crazy House it is. If there are any written or unwritten house building rules, then they have been all broken when Hang Nga was being designed. The architecture is so unconventional, people also refer to it as “Tree House”, “Spider Web Chalet” or plethora of other names and they are all correct as that is precisely what Crazy House in Da Lat, Vietnam looks like. At first sight, Hang Nga Guesthouse resembles a giant Banyan Tree that came alive and unearthed its maze of roots swirling randomly in all directions. Massive spider webs hang off the tree branches and once you enter the tree house, you find yourself walking through hallways and staircases that resemble fairytale caves. The intent to integrate nature into architecture is apparent. Once you have made your way up the winding stairs, you will be passing through themed rooms, such as the Tiger Room, Giraffe Room, Ant Room, etc. Hang Nga Guesthouse is a fusion of architecture found in Disney Land Castles and Antoni Gaudi’s individualistically designed buildings in Barcelona. Except that Hang Viet Nga, an architect who designed Crazy House has never been to Disney Land nor heard of Antoni Gaudi.

Hang Nga Guesthouse Location

Hang Nga Guesthouse and Gallery is located on a Huynh Thuc Khang street in Da Lat, the capital of Lam Dong Province in Vietnam. The exact address is: 3 Huynh Thuc Khang Street, Dalat, 20000, Vietnam. Hang Nga Guesthouse is still works in progress and its creator – Ms. Hang Nga still lives on site. The phone number for bookings is (063) 822 070. You can see the location of Crazy House on an interactive, navigable map below (courtesy of Google Maps TM):

City of Da Lat, Vietnam

Da Lat is a tourist hot spot for locals Vietnamese who come here for family getaways, company outings and honeymoons. Nicknamed “The City of Love”, “City of Eternal Spring”, or “Le Petit Paris”, Da Lat was built by French colonist in the 1920′s who used its elevated area as a retreat from scorching heat of nearby Saigon. Picturesque French colonial villas are scattered throughout town but French influence is also apparent from ever present croissant bakeries, cafes, restaurants or hotels. There is even a replica of the Eiffel Tower in town.

Unlike most of Vietnam, higher elevation of Da Lat makes for more bearable temperatures and less humidity. Through this fact, Da Lat is known as being the most pleasant town in Vietnam. But it is not only pleasant by the climate. Its postcard perfect setting with surrounding hills and a small lake in the center offers sceneries unseen in the rest of the country. Outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking or canoeing in this picturesque landscape are said to be the best in Vietnam.

Tuyen Lam Lake in the Highlands of Dalat Hazed in Morning Fog, Photo: Nguyen Tan Phat, Wikipedia

Getting to Da Lat

If your wallet permits, you can fly to Da Lat from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi via Vietnam Airlines. While these flights are safe, they are not particularly reliable. Cancellations are frequent and happen without notice. It is wise to check with the airport prior to going there. Flights only take about 50 minutes from Ho Chi Minh City and 1 hr 40 minutes from Hanoi.

Daily bus service departs for Hanoi via Da Lat from Sinh Cafe in the backpacker’s area in Saigon (HCMC) and the same one goes back down south from Hanoi via Nha Trang (popular beach town in Vietnam) from where it takes about 5 hours to get to Da Lat. Bus ride from Saigon takes about 7 to 9 hours depending on the time of year and road conditions.

Interior of the Crazy House, Photo: Hector Garcia, Flickr

Hang Nga Story

Hang Nga Guesthouse and Art Gallery is named after the woman who came with an idea of an extraordinary house design and brought it to life. Good thing was that Ms. Hang Viet Nga is a daughter of the late Truong Chinh – high ranking official of the Communist Party of Vietnam who became country’s second president. Building avant-guard, lavish houses seemed very anti-socialist to many party officials who put a stop to Ms. Nga’s intentions to build a house like that in the country, but being direct family with the president, she was eventually allowed to go ahead with it and come 1990, the Crazy House was born.

Staircase Inside Crazy House, Photo: hankoss, Flickr

Thanks to her aristocratic background, Hang Viet Nga got her early education in prestigious schools in China and a PhD in Architecture from the University of Moscow in then communist Soviet Union. She was seen as a bit too eccentric upon return to Da Lat and when construction on the Crazy House began, this notion has just become stronger. Determined to bring her dream house to reality, Hang Viet Nga worked on designs, combining the elements of nature Da Lat is surrounded with, with suitability for use by people and the result is an architectonic gem that one would never expect to see in a country like Vietnam.

There are hardly any right angles anywhere on Hang Nga Guesthouse. You won’t find perfect circles there either – only curves and more curves, always intertwined with elements of nature, such as animals (a spider, giraffe, frog, ant or bear), plants (such as mushrooms) and even a pond. To this day Ms. Hang Viet Nga insists that people used to live close to nature in the past and as a result, they were friendlier and in more harmony with one another.

Exterior Artwork on the Crazy House in Vietnam, Photo: Kelisi, Wikipedia

Every part of the Hang Nga Guesthouse is hand built by a team of local enthusiasts employed by Ms. Nga. Conventional furniture would never fit in a room with no straight lines. What started as an art gallery, was later turned into a guesthouse to help generate the revenue which was then used to pay for custom work expansions of the house required. Admission fees charged to those who just wish to look, but not stay is another stream of income. It only costs 10,000 Vietnamese Dong, which is less than $1 US (according to the latest conversion rates $1 = 18,000 Dong).

Hang Nga Guesthouse Rooms

Each room in the Crazy House is unique and themed. Each comes with its own bathroom and fireplace. Unique, handcrafted furniture complements the theme of each room. The Tiger Room bears Chinese theme and represents the strengths. The Kangaroo Room is all about the Aussies, but you don’t have to be one to stay there. The Eagle Room is a symbol of strong and big Americans where as the Ant Room represents hard working people of Vietnam. The Rooftop Room comes with no ceiling so you get to sleep with the stars. And if you like to get spoiled during your stay at the Hang Nga Guesthouse, the Bee Room with a waterfall and a massage bathtub could be for you.

Custom Themed Eagle Room in Hang Nga Guesthouse, Photo: Jectre, Flickr

Hang Nga Guesthouse Video

This three minute YouTube video gives very neat perspective on what the Crazy House looks like from the inside, including the peaks into various themed rooms:

Even though Dalat residents named the Hang Nga Guesthouse “The Crazy House” because it was out of what they would consider “normal”, they have grown to accept it as an important part of their town and a popular tourist attraction. It is without doubt a fun place to visit and an interesting experience to stay a night in. The rates range from USD $30.00 to $85.00 per day which is definitely steep for Vietnam, but you are getting a one of a kind experience that’s unrivaled not only in Vietnam, but in the world. Da Lat can be explored on foot, but if you’d like to also visit the hill tribes and enjoy their native performances, you may want to consider hiring a member of the Easy Riders team. They are the motorcycle riders who know all the places you want to see and will drive you everywhere for a fun filled day without any wasted time. And no, you don’t have to be particularly crazy to enjoy the Crazy House. It is a place worth visiting when traveling to Vietnam or backpacking through South East Asia. Enjoy!

Being one of the Extremes on Earth, Mount Thor holds the prime as the greatest vertical drop in the world. The peak of Mount Thor towers up 1250 meters (4101 feet), delivering the drop that is more than one and a half times the height of Burj Dubai – currently the highest man made structure on Earth. With such impressive and unmatched measurements, the Thor Peak attracts fans of climbing and base jumping from all over the world, but one doesn’t have to be into extreme sports to enjoy the mountain. Aside from claiming the prime as the world’s greatest purely vertical drop, Mount Thor is also one of the world’s most impressive mountain peaks to look at and photograph.

The Peak of Mount Thor, Photo: Ansgar Walk, Wikipedia

Mount Thor Location

Mount Thor is located in Auyuittuq National Park, on the Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. Nunavut is the newest and largest Canadian territory which takes up much of Northern Canada and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The mountain range Thor Peak is a part of is named after the island it spreads across – Baffin Mountains which are part of vast mountain range known as Arctic Cordillera. The nearest town from where to start an excursion would be Pangnirtung, which is located 46 km (29 miles) southwest of Mount Thor. You can see the location of Thor Peak on a navigable, interactive map below (provided by Google Maps TM):

What’s In The Name

Thor is the name of Nordic God of Thunder. Baffin Island is close to Greenland so the Viking influence in names is apparent. Mount Asgard also bears the name from Norse mythology known as being the capital of Norse Gods, the home of Valhalla hall.

Auyuittuq, the name of the national park means “the land that never melts” in Inuktitut – the language of Inuit people, Nunavut’s Aboriginals.

How to Get to Mount Thor

One of the specialties I like to offer on pages of Vacation Ideas are hidden tourist gems. These are the places none of your friends have been to and most will probably not have heard of, yet they are absolutely fabulous and some of the finest on Earth. Mount Thor is definitely one of them. It does get a fair deal of avid climbers and base jumpers visiting it, it’s still one of the least touristy areas introduced on Vacation Ideas yet.

Auyuittuq National Park is far and wide one of the most remote and least accessible places on Earth. I wouldn’t even be able to call it an “off the beaten track” tourist spot because that doesn’t do its remoteness justice. No matter what type of exotic location your friends may have visited where you haven’t been yet, once you have visited Mount Thor, you will wipe their location off the table top in an instant.

Trekking Through Akshayuk Pass in Auyuittuq National Park, Photo: pmorgan, Flickr

This remoteness comes at a price, though. There is no regular plane services to these parts of Canada and none of larger carriers service this area so your only option are small charter plane companies or group tours. This can easily push the price to thousands of dollars but if a large enough group can be put together, it could reduce the cost significantly.

The best starting point is Churchill, Manitoba (known for its Polar Bear spotting adventures). From there one could arrange a flight into Pangnirtung which brings you on Baffin Island from where further arrangements can be made.

Parks Visitor Information Center in Pangnirtung sells entry permits to Auyuittuq National Park. You can buy a daily pass for $15 or an annual pass for $100. Visit the Auyuittuq National Park of Canada official website for most up to date information on current fees and weather conditions: http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/nu/auyuittuq/index.aspx

Stream Crossing in Auyuittuq National Park with Thor Peak in the Background, Photo: deepchi1, Flickr

Pangnirtung is about 30km across the fjord from the entrance to the Auyuittuq National Park. Inuit people (Canadian aboriginals) living in Pangnirtung offer boat services to get you there, or if you get to the area in winter (not recommended) and the fjord is frozen, you can rent a snowmobile.
Getting to Mount Thor from the entrance to Auyuittuq National Park is a real adventure on its own. The only Ranger Station that exists in the park is by the entrance so you won’t have many safe heavens once you dared inside. You will be taking the Akshayuk Pass which starts at the entrance and follows through the valley along the Weasel And Owl Rivers. You will need to ford the rivers at shallow crossings on several occasions.

Inukshuq – cairns of rocks built to resemble the shape of a person line the way so you don’t get lost. The feeling of tightness with other adventurers and explorers is really strong in a remote location such as Auyuittuq National Park.

<img src="http://www.vacationideas.me/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/inukshuq-leading-way-mount-thor.jpg" alt="Inukshuq Leading the Way to Mt. Thor, Photo: deepchi1, Flickr" title="Inukshuq Leading the Way to Mt.
It is a 4 hour swift hike from the park entrance to the foot of Mount Thor but the nature is spectacular and pristine, giving you the feeling of exploring places no man has seen before. After you have passed Windy Lake, you will see Thor Peak towering in the distance.

Small hut at the base of Mount Thor is available to the adventures to sleep in or rest before challenging climb. It isn’t big and will only take about 4 people max, but it’s better than nothing in this untamed wilderness. Another hut is located at the foot of Mount Asgard and by the entrance, near Mount Overlord where the camping site is.

Steep Cliffs of Mount Thor, Photo: Peter Morgan, Wikipedia

Mount Thor – The Best Time to Visit

If you intend to do climbing, the best time to visit Thor Peak would be between June and August. If you are not a climber but would like to experience unspoiled, raw wilderness at its finest, you may start to plan your expedition as early as April and as late as September, however it is strongly recommended that you time your visit to the Auyuittuq for summer. Winters in Nunavut are known for being long and tough. Temperature often drops below -40 Degrees Celsius and stays in that range for weeks. Coupled with strong winds, this truly is not the type of weather to explore the wilderness in. However, Auyuittuq National Park is open to visitors year round so it is possible to go there even in the midst of dead winter, but you truly don’t want to do that.

Camping in Auyuittuq National Park

The only official campground is by Overlord Mountain at the head of Akshayuk Valley. Camping is otherwise allowed throughout Auyuittuq National Park but bear in mind that this is pure wilderness. You camp wherever you can find a good spot for the tent.

Summit Lake Reflect Mouth Thor, Photo: deepchi1, Flickr

Mount Thor Climbing

The very first people to climb Mount Thor were the members of Arctic Institute of North America. Hans Weber, F. Schwarzenbach and J. Rothlisberger reached the peak of Mount Thor in 1953. Since then, Thor Peak has attracted many mountain climbers not only because of challenges it represents, but also because of its spectacular looks. Entire Auyuittuq National Park has countless peaks that would satisfy even the most demanding climber, including Mount Asgard which is best known for the BASE jump performed by stuntman Rick Sylvester in 1976 for the opening sequence of The Spy Who Loved Me, the tenth film in the James Bond series.

Thor Peak is technically a very challenging mountain to climb and should only be attempted by the most seasoned climbers. Extensive climbing experience is essential no matter which route you pick.

Mount Thor Rappelling

The west face of Mount Thor is an uninterrupted wall with 1250 meters long drop and an average grade of 105 degrees which means it slightly overhangs. This makes for challenging, but rewarding climbing. To descend such steep mountain wall, climbers must rappel (rappelling – sometimes called abseiling – is the technique used by climbers to descend the slope which requires the use of ropes because it’s too dangerous to go without). The attempt at rappelling Mount Thor was made in 2004 by a Canadian park ranger Philip Robinson who climbed the mountain on his own and attempted to descend the steep wall but encountered a problem with his equipment and fell to his death.

The world record for the longest rappel in the world was set by a team of American climbers who rappelled Mount Thor on July 23, 2006. The world record team consisted of following world grade climbers: Tim Hudson, Deldon Barfuss, Donny Opperman, Gordon Rosser, Kenneth Waite, Ben Holley, Dirk Siron and Chuck Constable. The first successful attempt to scale western wall of Mount Thor was made in 1985. The team took 33 days to complete their mission. Previous 30 attempts all failed.

Mount Thor BASE Jump

Thanks to its uninterrupted wall that continuously overhangs, Mount Thor has been attracting the stuntmen and daredevils wishing to experience the long lasting free fall. Many BASE jumping attempts have been performed at Mount Thor, including formerly the highest BASE jump in the world, even though that has since been surpassed by the BASE jump off Great Trango Tower in Pakistan.

Mount Thor Video

Video below is an episode from an “Into the Arctic” video journal by artist Cory Trepanier. It shows lightly what it takes to get to Thor Peak and has some nice images of the mountain:

Mt. Thor in Canada is the world’s largest cliff face. It is set against the backdrop of the magnificent Penny Ice Cap – the only ice formation on Earth that still remains from the last Ice Age. Surrounded by fjords of unspeakable beauty within the Auyuittuq National Park, Mount Thor is one spine tingling piece of granite rock that’s sure to bewilder both thrill seeker, as well as beauty admirers.

The ruins of Bhangarh Fort in the Rajasthan state in India are known for being the most hunted place in this south Asian country. While it’s understandable that not all people believe in ghosts, there are warnings at all entry points to the Bhangarh Fort advising people not to venture into the city at night. In fear that something terrible could happen, some of the signs posted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) not only advise against, but literally prohibit visitors from entering Bhangarh Fort at night. The sign reads in Indian language: “Entering the borders of Bhangarh before sunrise and after sunset is strictly prohibited.” If you are a ghost hunter or like visiting mysterious places, especially those known to be haunted by ghosts, then Bhangarh Fort deserves a solid spot on your “Must Visit Before I Die” list.

Bhangarh Fort - Ruins of the City Haunted by Ghosts, Photo: Findsiddiqui

Bhangarh Fort Location

Abandoned fortress of Bhangarh is located between the Pink City of Jaipur – the capital of Rajasthan and Alwar, a city in the same state located about 160 km south of Delhi. Rajasthan is located in the north-west of India and it’s country’s largest state. You can see exact location of the Bhangarh Fort on the interactive, navigable map below (provided by Google Maps TM).

How to Get to Bhangarh

Nearby cities of Jaipur and Alwal are great starting points as they are major metropolitan hubs and are easy to get to. If you are already in India, you can take a train to either city, or if your budget allows, you can fly in instead. Regular bus service leaves for Bhangarh Ruins but requires about a kilometer of walking because nearest bus stop is not directly at the ruin. Another option is to take private taxes which are more expensive than buses, but get you there faster and at a time convenient to you.

The Bhangarh Story

The story (and the history) of the Bhangarh began in the year of 1573 when the fortress was established. Built by Raja Bhagawant Das – the ruler of the city of Amber, Bhangarh Fort has become the residence of Madho Singh, ruler’s second son who fought alongside his father and brother in many wars. The decline of Bhangarh Fort started in 1630 after Chhatr Singh, son of Madho Singh got killed in a violent attack. The decline continued until 1783 when the fortress and the city were completely abandoned following that year’s famine.

Bhangarh Fort Located Within Lush Forest, Photo: Tushar Pokle, Flickr

The Bhangarh Myths

According to one of the myths, Bhangarh was cursed by Guru Balu Nath (Baba Balanath), who originally sanctioned the construction but warned that his sacred meditating place lies nearby and should the palace reach the size which would cast a shadow big enough to reach his forbidden retreat, the city would fall into ruin. Ignorant of the warning, Ajab Singh – one of dynasty’s descendants raised the palace to a height that cast the shadow on the Balu Nath’s retreat and the city was cursed.

Another myth talks about princess Ratnavati who was so beautiful she had no match in all of Rajasthan. Marriage proposals came coming, but one day she was spotted by a tantric named Singha Sevra who was so bewildered by her beauty, he decided to use his black magic to get to her. As he was spying on the princess, he saw her servant buying perfumes for her. The tantric used the opportunity and put a black magic spell on the lotion which was supposed to draw the princess to him upon initial use.

His intentions were uncovered by a person loyal to the princess who informed her of bewitched lotion. The princess took the bottle and smashed it against the rock which came to life and rolled over the tantric killing him. Before he died, he laid a curse on entire land which came to be the following year during battle between Bhangarh and Ajabgarh. All who dwelt in Bhangarh died, including the princess.

There are several other myths and legends that explain the reasons why the fort was abandoned overnight and never re-inhabited, but they all revolve around the fact that the city was cursed and is now haunted by ghosts.

Bhangarh Fort Ruins, Photo: Findsiddiqui, Flickr

The Bhangarh Ghosts

The Government of India wanted to put the myth of ghosts haunting the Bhangarh Ruin to rest by deploying the military to patrol the fort at night. However, none of the Indian military personnel dared to participate in this ghost busting operation because the belief that it’s haunted by ghosts is so deep. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the official government body responsible for maintenance of monuments and ruins throughout the country officially recognizes the Bhangarh Fort as a place haunted by ghosts. Because of that, no accommodation if offered within the ruins and even the office of ASI was built at a safe distance from the fort, instead of within it as is the case of other similar sites.

Ghost Town of Bhangarh Video

In this video documentary, the Voice of America correspondent Steve Herman reports on the Ghost Town of Bhangarh, haunted by the spirits of the dead:

Even though Bhangarh is deserted at night, locals report that strange noises, including music and dancing can be heard coming from the ruins of the fort. The access to Bhangarh is regulated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and by their rule, it is illegal to enter Bhangarh at night. However, several people did make an entry during forbidden hours just to get a sense of thrill associated with being in one of world’s most haunted places. Bhangarh Fort offers superior opportunities for mystery and ghost hunters to experience the ultimate adrenaline rush. The restless spirit of the magician who cursed the land watches over Bhangarh from a nearby hill during the day and comes down at night in search of a ghost of his beloved princess. Welcome to the world of Ghost Tourism.

Monteverde which means “Green Mountain” in Spanish is a small town in the Puntarenas province of Costa Rica. The population of Monteverde is not high – currently at about 6,500 residents many of which speak good English so even if your Spanish is a bit rusty or non existent, you won’t have much trouble getting by. What makes Monteverde an attractive vacation destination is nature. With its unique cloud canopy, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (Reserva Biológica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde in Spanish) is a paradise for nature lovers and avid photographers. It comes as no surprise that people who visited Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve rank it as one of the most beautifully stunning and breath taking nature reserves in the world.

Suspense Bridge at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Photo: baxterclaus, Flickr

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Location

Majority of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is located in the Puntarenas province in Costa Rica, however parts stretch to the Alajuela province, along the Cordillera de Tilarán mountain range. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve consists of 10,500 hectares of tropical rainforest, 90% of which are virgin forest. Pristine nature makes it an amazing ecotourism destination. You can see the location of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve on the interactive, navigable map below (provided by Bing Maps).

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve History

Artifacts such as pots, containers, ceramics and grinders have been found in various areas of Monteverde, dating as far back as 3000 BC suggesting the village tribes of Clovis Native Americans had inhabited the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve area long before the Spanish invasion of 1502.

In the early 20th century, Creole populations arrived in small numbers to work in or provide services for the gold mines. Their main settlement was in the valley of San Luis which provided them with year round warm weather.

In the 1950′s, members of the religious group Quakers came to Costa Rica from the United States of America to avoid the draft during the Korean War. Costa Rica had a non-violent, army-free constitution at the time which bounded well with Quakers’ pacifistic values. Quakers settled in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve area because it facilitated dairy farming and offered a little cooler climate.

Virgin Rainforest of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Photo: slandete, Flickr

When scientist George Powell and his wife visited Monteverde in 1972, they were astounded by its natural beauty and decided to take step towards preservation of the area and protection of the rain forest from a threat of homesteading. They were joined by Monteverde resident Wilford Guindon and through their combined efforts, 320 hectares of land were purchased by the Tropical Science Center which initiated the establishment of Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. The Tropical Science Center currently owns 10,500 hectares of land and is continuously securing the financial and human resources to protect and maintain the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

Today, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is visited by approximately 250,000 tourists, which is quite a jump compared to a few hundred back in 1975. This size-able influx has brought great improvement in accessibility and availability of goods and services provided in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Fauna and Flora

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve includes eight distinct ecological zones and protects more than 400 species of birds, over 100 species of mammals and roughly 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles. Some of these include 30 different species of hummingbirds, jaguars, ocelots, baird’s tapirs, three-wattled bellbirds, bare necked umbrella birds, guans, toucanets, pumas, monkeys and even the very rare resplendent quetza. It is filled with extravagantly tall trees that range from 30 to 40 meters in height and pathways that are embellished in orchids, bromeliads, ferns, vines, and mosses. The unique landscape is home to more than 300 species of orchids and 200 species of fern and 800 species of epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants).

Orange Knee Tarantula Burrows at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Photo: ClifB, Flickr

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Weather

The reserve is incomparable to others for many reasons, but geographically it is situated on both the Pacific and Atlantic slopes of the continental divide. The cloud forest ranges in elevations of 1,200 m to 1,600 m, which keeps the humidity of the area extremely high, making cloud cover a constant – hence the name Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. There are three seasons that occur in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve – dry, wet and misty. Daytime temperatures vary with cloud cover and wind conditions, but are generally in the range of 15 to 22 Degrees Celsius. Monteverde experiences an average of 3000 millimeters (118 inches) of rain a year.

Canopy Bridge Disappears into a Haze of Clouds in Monteverde, Costa Rica, Photo: DirkvdM, Wikipedia

Monteverde Lodge

Monteverde Lodge and Gardens is a great choice of accommodation for travelers wishing to soak in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Its location on the edge of the reserve, right in the Tilarn Mountain delivers the feeling of being hand in hand with nature.

Trapp Family Lodge is a cozy, 20-room inn located only 15 minutes on foot from the entrance to the reserve. Warm welcomes and homey atmosphere make Trapp Family Lodge a suitable accommodation option for ecotourists.

Places of Interest and Things To Do

To really soak in what the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has to offer, you will need to be strong willed. Aside from common zipline adventures, there are also rappelling and canopy tours that cross cables and a series of suspension bridges and trams that give you a bird’s eye view of Monteverde. But don’t worry, if heights are not you thing, there is still plenty to do! You can explore the variety of trails that are mapped out and well maintained. You can go see the hummingbird show at the Hummingbird Gallery, or visit several of the serpentariums, insect museums and butterfly gardens. There is horseback riding, mountain biking, bird watching… the activities are endless!

Zipline Over Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve in Costa Rica, Photo: Velorian, Wikitravel

Every visit is a different scene, you will always see something new because where there is an abundance of nature, there is an abundance of adventure waiting to happen. You don’t have to take my word for it, go experience it yourself – you will not be disappointed! Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve delivers.

Before we get to the list of Top 6 Most Beautiful Atolls of the World, we first need to take a closer look at the definition of an atoll. What is an atoll and what is a difference between and atoll and an island. While an island is a piece of land surrounded by water, atoll is also a piece of land surrounded by water, but with a body of water within itself. In other words, atoll is a small piece of land that surrounds water on the inside and is surrounded by water on the outside. The best way to think of an atoll is that it’s a ring of landmass sticking out of the sea or an ocean. There is however one more important aspect to the atolls which has not been mentioned yet. The landmass that creates an atoll is not a soil, it’s a coral.

Atolls are former coral reefs that formed around a volcanic island. In certain tropical conditions, these coral reefs that are fringing the island start to expand, while the island itself starts to shrink until it gradually disappears under the surface of the ocean. What’s left is a ring of corals encircling a lagoon and that is what we define as an Atoll. Needless to say – atolls are visually astounding formations found in tropical zones of large bodies of water, such as the Pacific or Indian Oceans. Aside from breathtaking looks, atolls count as some of world’s best places to go snorkeling or scuba diving. The following is a list of Top 6 Most Beautiful Atolls of the World:

Tikehau Atoll, French Polynesia

Tikehau Atoll of the Palliser Islands Group of the French Polynesia, is located 340 kilometers northeast of Tahiti. Tikehau, which means “Peaceful Landing” in Tuamotuan is considered to be the most beautiful of all the atolls in the French Polynesia, and forms an almost unbroken circle that is 25.7 kilometers across. You will never run out of things to do at Tikehau Atoll. There is a resort that provides scuba diving, snorkeling, picnic and sunset cruises, fishing and canoeing. An abundance of sea life makes for fantastic diving – manta rays, barracudas, tunas, multicolored coral fish, and the ubiquitous reef sharks. The stay will be costly, as there is only one resort, and rooms range from $600 – $1100 per night, and you are looking at an average of $150/day per person for meals. But overall, if you get the chance to see the beauty Tikehau Atoll has to offer, it will be worth every penny.

Tetiaroa Atoll, French Polynesia

Tetiaroa Atoll is located 59 kilometers north of Pepeete – the capital of the French Polynesia located on the island of Tahiti. New luxury resort is being built on Tetiaroa Atoll, and rumor has it it will cost around $1500 per night. Unless this resort is built, there will be no overnight accommodations on Tetiaroa Atoll but there is still plenty to do. From fishing, diving and snorkeling, to getting lost in photography and soak in the beautiful sights and sunshine, Tetiaroa Atoll has it all. Getting there is an adventure of its own. You can either sail to Tetiaroa Atoll with your own yacht, or hire one of the charter companies… either way though, a trip to Tetiaroa Atoll remains the privilege of the wealthy.

Tetiaroa Atoll - The Most Beautiful Atoll of the World, Photo: NASA, Flickr

Orona Atoll, Kiribati

The Orona Atoll is also referred to as Hull Island. It is one of the Phoenix Islands in the Republic of Kiribati. It measures in at 8.8 kilometers by 4 kilometers, with a total surface area of 3.9 square kilometers and an elevation of 9 meters above sea level. Orona was previously occupied, but as of 2004 it is uninhabited. The island is known to be a nesting ground for turtles, and some other forms of wildlife including lizards, feral cats, rats, pigs, dogs, lizards and crabs. While shores of Orona Atoll are lined with Coconut Palms that, the rest of the atoll is mostly covered in scrub forest, herbs and grasses. In 2008, in order to preserve their fragile ecosystems, Orona Atoll along with the other islands of the Phoenix Islands archipelago were declared the protected areas, making them the largest marine protected area to date.

Orona Atoll - The Most Beautiful Atoll of the World, Photo: NASA, Wikipedia

Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands

Currently uninhabited, the Bikini Atoll is part of the Micronesian Islands, which is part of the Republic of Marshall Islands. Bikini Atoll consists of 23 islands that surround a lagoon in the Pacific Ocean spreading over an area of 591.4 kilometers squared. Between the years of 1946 and 1958, the Bikini Atoll took part in the Pacific Proving Grounds, where more than 20 nuclear tests took place, including the test for the first practical hydrogen bomb. In 1997 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that it is now safe to walk the islands again, but since radiation levels remain high, it is highly recommended not to eat any food fished out of the ocean surrounding the atoll. Due to the same high levels of radioactivity as well as limited availability of services on the atoll, diving is not safe nor recommended. All of these restrictions along with lack of fishing resulted in abundance of sea life in the waters surrounding Bikini Atoll. Another thing that makes Bikini Atoll worth a visit is the shipwreck graveyard that includes the USS Saratoga (CV-3), the USS Apagon (SS-308) and even the Japanese battleship Nagato, but since scuba diving there is tricky, this attraction is moot for the time being.

Bikini Atoll - The Most Beautiful Atoll of the World, Photo: NASA, Wikipedia

Aitutaki Atoll, Cook Islands

Aitutaki, also known as Araura, Ararau or Utataki, consists of 15 islands that are a part of the Cook Islands archipelago. Since Aitutaki Atoll is the Cook Islands second most visited tourist trap, visitors are catered to through a variety of resorts ranging from budget to high class. The land mainly consists of coral, beaches and volcanic fertile soil that allow delicious tropical fruits and vegetables to grow in excess. The basis of Aitutaki Atoll is roughly the shape of an equilateral triangle with sides 12 kilometers in length and has a maximum elevation of 123 meters. The total land surface is 18.05 kilometers squared, while the lagoon is around 50 to 74 kilometers squared. Aitutaki Atoll has a population of about 2000 people and is subdivided into 4 districts, containing 8 villages. There are however, no direct flights to get to the main island but there is an area for boats to anchor and a small airport for boat planes to land.

Aitutaki Atoll - The Most Beautiful Atoll of the World, Photo: luthor522, Flickr

Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles

The Aldabra Atoll is located in the Indian Ocean and forms part of the Seychelles within the Aldabra Group. It is the second largest atoll in the world measuring at 13 kilometers long and 14.5 kilometers wide and up to 8 meters above sea level. The atoll itself consists of 4 islands that encircle a lagoon, with a total land surface area of 155.4 kilometers squared. The lagoon is 224 kilometers squared but about 2/3 of this falls during low tides. Aldabra Atoll is practically untouched by humans and uninhabited aside from rangers and island management, allowing fauna unique to this island to grow and prosper. This atoll is known mostly for its Aldabra Giant Tortoise, which nearly became extinct due to hunting in the 18th century but now has a population of over 150,000. You will also find green turtles, hawksbill turtles, hammerhead sharks, manta rays, barracuda, and birds, including the Aldabra Rail – the last surviving flightless bird of the Indian Ocean region calling Aldabra Atoll their home. The land mainly consists of limestone uplands, sand dunes and beaches and a mixture of trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses.

Aldabra Atoll - The Most Beautiful Atoll of the World, Photo: Trisha M Shears, Wikipedia

Ranging from uninhabited and roughing it to luxury and resorted, from day trips to extended stays, these atolls cover it all. Whether you are a diver, traveler or just going on vacation, these atolls are not only stunning in natural beauty, but also offer you that real chance to “get away from it all”. I hope you enjoyed the list of Top 6 Most Beautiful Atolls of the World and if you know of an atoll that should be on the list, share your views in a comment to this post.

Are you the type of person who likes to add adrenaline rush to their hiking adventures? If so, this list of Top 10 Most Dangerous Hikes in America is for you. Needless to say, embarking on any of these hikes requires more physical strength and balls of brass. If you like keeping your limbs intact and your joints in place, you may wish to opt for hikes that are not on the Top 10 Most Dangerous Hikes in America list. If you do look for the ultimate adventure and fear no danger, then at least make sure you either have a hiking buddy or a solid survival plan should things go south.

10th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Huckleberry Mountain, Montana

Get yourself ready for an 18 1/2 mile hike in Glacier National Park. This area is known for its delicious huckleberries and Grizzly Bears! There is approximately one bear within a one-mile radius of every backcountry campsite. Bring your bear spray and make loud voices, just to make sure that all those bears know you are there, and to stay away from you. Huckleberry Mountain is not a trip for beginners as the terrain is rough and steep. Be sure to bring plenty of food and water, as well as insect repellent.

10th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Huckleberry Mountain, Montana, Photo: silentsnake09, Flickr

9th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Half Dome, California

Located in Yosemite National Park, Half Dome is precisely that – a granite dome that looks like it was cut in half. Half Dome’s crest rises more than 4,737 feet above the valley’s floor and reaches an elevation of 8,836 feet. It is a 14 mile round trip hike so unless you are a marathon runner, you should train before attempting this feat. It consists of extremely steep slopes that are so challenging even highly experienced hikers recommend using the cables to climb the mountain. Bring plenty of water, gloves and a hiking stick. Out of the 4 million visitors this mountain sees every year, a very small percentage make it all the way to the top.

9th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Half Dome, California, Photo: Direct Cutter, Wikipedia

8th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee-North Carolina

Diversity is the best way to describe this destination. Glaciers, mountains, weather and wildlife; the variety is endless. The park rises more than 5,000 feet for over 36 miles and has elevations ranging from 875 to 6,643 feet. The Great Smokey Mountains – also referred to as “The Smokies” – experiences a high level of precipitation of about 50 – 80 inches and around 40 – 50 inches of snow every year. Between this high level of precipitation and high winds, there are possibilities of major flooding and landslides. If you can hike through these conditions, you will be accompanied by a vast array of flora, fauna and wildlife that’s definitely worth seeing.

8th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee-North Carolina, Photo: Aviator31, Wikipedia

7th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Buckskin Gulch, Utah

If you can imagine an amazing 13 mile sculpture garden, so deeply enriched into the earth that you can barely see the sky… well, that is just the beginning. Be prepared to wade through cold, stagnant pools of water or mud that range from ankle to neck deep, flash floods, cold temperatures (as the sun does not reach you very well) and quicksand. This is an adventure not meant for the weak willed. Storms that are located more than 50 miles away can send 100 foot waterfalls into the canyons, engulfing you in the waves of pressure. The overall hike stretches for a good 20 miles and would generally take 3-4 days. There is a $5.00 admittance fee per person, per day. It is highly recommended to bring at least 6 feet of rope and an extra pair of clothes. If there is even the slightest threat of rain, it is recommended to interrupt your trip as many life losses in Buckskin Gulch have been attributed to this factor.

7th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Buckskin Gulch, Utah, Photo: rscottjones, Flickr

6th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Kalalau Trail, Hawaii

Running along the north shore of Kauai, this 11 mile hike is very strenuous and even an experienced, very fit hiker might take a full day or two to complete the adventure. There is a fee for camping at the Kalalau Trail and you cannot stay more than two consecutive nights in Hanakoa Valley, so make sure you are fit and ready before taking on this trail as your time is limited!

6th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Kalalau Trail, Hawaii, Photo: ohhector, Flickr

5th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Mount Rainier, Washington

Mount Rainier is an active, composite volcano (aka stratovolcano). It reaches an elevation of 14,411 feet and is located in its own national park – the Mount Rainier National Park. It is currently the most glaciated peak of the lower 48 states and also has 2 volcanic craters at its summit. Each crater is over 1000 feet and are known for having formed the world’s largest volcanic glacier cave. Currently about 3 deaths per year are recorded due to falling rocks and ice, avalanches and in extreme weather conditions – hypothermia.

5th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Mount Rainier, Washington, Photo: papalars, Flickr

4th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Mount Washington, New Hampshire

With a whopping 6,288 ft of elevation, Mount Washington is the highest point in northeastern United States. In 1996 it made a world record for having one of the strongest wind gusts recorded on the earth’s surface, clocking in at 231 mi/hr. Mount Washington is known for its erratic weather, as it receives a large amount of precipitation, which is not usual in such a cold environment. The winds of Mount Washington are generally more forceful than those of a hurricane and are usually present for 110/365 days of the year. There’s one good news, though – the volcano’s last eruption was recorded over 150 years ago!

4th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Mount Washington, New Hampshire, Photo: BenFrantzDale, Wikipedia

3th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Pikes Peak, Colorado

Pikes Peak is the easternmost point of the Rockies and is also home to the well known tale of Big Foot. Despite its high elevation of 14,115 ft, Pikes Peak attracts 150,000 visitors who attempt the 13 mile trek on foot a year. Campground facilities are available throughout the trail so it is possible to spread the hike over several days and enjoy the beautiful landscape. If you’d rather avoid a long hike on foot but would still like to experience the adventure, know that it is possible to take this trip by bike. When you reach the peak, the conditions are that of a typically alpine environment. The air is thin and only consists of about 60% of the amount of oxygen you would have at sea level. Temperatures rarely reach above 40F, even in the summer, and you can get snow any time of the year. As well, thunderstorms are very common and you should always be prepared for the hail and gusts of wind that can reach well over 100 mi/hr. Despite this however, a few popular annual events take place here; Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent foot races.

3th Most Dangerous Hike in America: Pikes Peak, Colorado, Photo: Ryan Thomas, Flickr

2nd Most Dangerous Hike in America: Bright Angel Trail, Grand Canyon, Arizona

If you don’t get dehydrated – sudden rain storms, flash flooding, extreme heat, wild life encounters and rockfalls are only a few hazards of the Bright Angel Trail. It is a tough and long trail to hike however the plus side to it is that it is a corridor trail, which means that it not only receives ongoing maintenance, but there are park also rangers paroling the area relentlessly. The descend form trail’s highest elevation of 6,860 feet down to 2,480 feet is 8.1 miles long and is very strenuous. Water is limited and a lot of cases of overexertion occur. This is definitely not a trail for beginners and is open year round for those who are daring enough to take on this trip!

2nd Most Dangerous Hike in America: Bright Angel Trail, Grand Canyon, Arizona, Photo: Notary137, Wikipedia

The Most Dangerous Hike in America: Horseshoe Canyon, Utah

Formerly known as Barrier Canyon, Horseshoe Canyon is a 6 – 7 hour, 7 1/2 mile round trip hike in the heart of the desert. It is well known for its beautiful collection of Barrier Canyon Style (BCS) rock art that includes both pictographs and petroglyphs. The famous Great Gallery, largest of several Horseshoe Canyon sites, is 200 feet long and 15 feet high. Scientists are still struggling to come up with an interpretation of these paintings, however, they have them dated from about 2,000 years old to as far as 8,000 years. In 1971, the Canyonlands National Park was formed in an attempt to protect and preserve these pieces of art. Though it takes a lot of stamina and perseverance to see these breathtaking formations, it is definitely worth it!

The Most Dangerous Hike in America: Horseshoe Canyon, Utah, Photo: Surfsupusa, Wikipedia

BONUS: The Maze, Utah

The Maze is a jungle of redrock full of canyons that lead to dead ends. Once you dare to step foot inside The Maze, you best make sure you have superior sense of orientation and great map reading skills – if you also want to make it out of there at some point. Great deal of hiking experience is required to take on this hike and luckily most visitors to the Canyonlands National Park are distracted by the inaccessibility and remoteness of the area and stay away from it. As a result, neighboring Island in the Sky district of the same National Park gets more than 264,000 visitors a year, whereas The Maze only sees 2,000. There are no marked trails in The Maze making it easy for an inexperienced hiker to get lost, however you would find no random skeletons of desperately lost hikers lying in the desert. So far only the most experienced trekkers dared to enter The Maze and many explore it by driving around in a Jeep so the area remains without recorded fatalities. It is still one of the most dangerous hikes in the United States of America and unless you want to be the first skeleton in The Maze, make sure you gain enough experience hiking less dangerous trails first.

I was reading an article about Dubai and learned that this Middle Eastern city is the 8th most visited city in the world. I was kind of surprised, but at the same time wasn’t really. It prompted me to initiate the research on which were the other most visited cities in the world as once you know who #8 is, you want to know the rest of the list. The findings were, for the most part, not surprising. The biggest surprise in my mind was the placement of Istanbul, the capital city of Turkey on the #7 spot. Really? Istanbul beating Rome? Anyway, without further ado, below is the list of Top 10 Most Visited Cities in the World including number of visitors a city receives per year.

Paris – France

Paris is the most visited city in the world with estimated 15.6 million visitors a year

Paris one of the first cities that come to mind of every traveler when talking about visiting Europe. Consider the most “chick” city in the world, Paris is full of stunning architecture, old churches, romantic cafes, spectacular monuments, art galleries and much, much more. Famous sites such as the Eiffel Tower or Notre Dame are a must visit for every traveler. And let’s not forget my personal favorite – the catacombs.

Paris - The Most Visited City in the World, Photo: agaw.dilim, Flickr

London – United Kingdom

London is the 2nd most visited city in the world with estimated 14.8 million visitors a year

Someone once said that when you get tired of London, you got tired of life. Life in London simply never ends. With sights like London Eye, Hyde Park, Oxford Street, Buckingham Palace, Covent Garden, Soho, Piccadilly Circus, etc this city can’t possibly be a bore.

London - 2nd Most Visited City in the World, Photo: Anirudh Koul, Flickr

Bangkok – Thailand

Bangkok is the 3rd most visited city in the world with estimated 10.84 million visitors a year

Bangkok is a city where ancient world meets modern lifestyle. Scattered among skyscrapers are breathtaking Buddhist temples housing statues of Buddha offering quiet refuge from the hassle of the life outside. Iconic Khao San Road is perhaps the most notorious backpackers street in the world.

Bangkok - 3rd Most Visited City in the World, Photo: Stuck in Customs, Flickr

Singapore – Singapore

Singapore is the 4th most visited city in the world with estimated 10.1 million visitors a year

Singapore is on its way to becoming a tropical tourist hub that embodies the best of Paris, London and New York all in one. After separating from Malaysia and embarking on the path of independence in 1965, Singapore has been a textbook perfect example of a successful city.

Singapore - 4th Most Visited City in the World, Photo: Merlion444, Wikipedia

New York City – United States of America

New York City is the 5th most visited city in the world with estimated 9.5 million visitors a year

The City that Never Sleeps has a personality of its own. Life cannot be complete without at least one visit to the Big Apple. It’s a mindboggling experience and it really doesn’t matter how much time you spend in New York, there is always something new and exciting to discover.

New York City - 5th Most Visited City in the World, Photo: Stuck in Customs, Flickr

Hong Kong – China

Hong Kong is the 6th most visited city in the world with estimated 7.94 million visitors a year

When it comes to “East Meets West”, Hong Kong is the city. Vibrant and cosmopolitan, Honk Kong is considered one of the safest large cities in the world and the city with the best public transport in the world.

Hong Kong - The 6th Most Visited City in the World, Photo: Sprengben, Flickr

Istanbul – Turkey

Istanbul is the 7th most visited city in the world with estimated 7.05 million visitors a year

Formerly known as Constantinople, Istanbul was once the capital of the Byzantine Empire. Voted the 2010 Capital of the European Culture, Istanbul is home to some of world’s finest architectural gems, such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace.

Istanbul - 7th Most Visited City in the World, Photo: Oberazzi, Flickr

Dubai – United Arab Emirates

Dubai is the 8th most visited city in the world with estimated 6.9 million visitors a year

Built out of nothing and into the business hub of the Middle East in just a few decades, Dubai is home to the world’s tallest building (Burj Dubai), world’s most expensive hotel (Burj al Arab), world’s largest man made islands (Palm Islands), the indoor ski slope built in the middle of a desert and much, much more.

Dubai - 8th Most Visited City in the World, Photo: Michael Foley Photography, Flickr

Shanghai – China

Shanghai is the 9th most visited city in the world with estimated 6.66 million visitors a year

Being the largest city in China, Shanghai is a bull on steroids that’s become East China’s international hub. Chinese traditions get intertwined with Western customs in a blend that will make the memories of your stay unforgettable.

Shanghai - 9th Most Visited City in the World, Photo: le niners, Flickr

Rome – Italy

Rome is the 10th most visited city in the world with estimated 6.12 million visitors a year

Rome personalizes thousands of years of human history. Roman Coliseum, The Forum, the Fontana di Trevi, the Pantheon – I could go on forever. And let’s not forget Vatican City and great Italian wine.

Rome - 10th Most Visited City in the World, Photo: Storm Crypt, Flickr

Visiting a place that’s on the Top 10 Most Visited Cities in the World has both its advantages and disadvantage. The fact that so many foreigners travel to these locations means that there truly must be something worthwhile to see. But at the same time it also means that there will be thousands upon thousands of tourists there, making it rather overrun. They each still count as must visit before you die cities. I definitely have each one of them on my personal “my visit” list.

Maldives have the ring of a very exotic destination and rightly so. This archipelago consisting of 1,190 coral islands is home to some of world’s finest beaches and world class diving opportunities. Each island of Maldives is very flat, only sticking a little bit out of the Indian Ocean. The highest point of an entire archipelago is mere 2.3 metres (7 ft 7 in) above sea level. Because of that, Maldives are affected by global warming and rising sea level more than any other country in the world. From the sea, Maldives look like an oasis with palm trees growing out of the endless ocean.

Maldives, Angaga Island Resort & Spa Photo by iujaz, Flickr

Maldives Location on a Map

Maldives archipelago is located in the Laccadive Sea, 700 kilometres (435 miles) southwest of Sri Lanka. The archipelago consists of 26 coral atolls which spread over an area of about 90,000 square kilometres. 200 islands are inhabited, additional 80 islands house tourists resorts (yes, one resort on entire island, giving you complete tranquility and the feel of a private beach/island).

Maldives is the smallest country on Asian continent – both as far as population and land area are concerned. On a worldwide scale, Maldives is the lowest country on the planet – with 1.5 meters above sea level average ground level and with 2.3 meters highest point, it is also the country with the lowest highest point in the world.

You can see the location of Maldives on an interactive, navigable map below. Keep in mind that Maldives is a set of more than one thousand islands. While most are uninhabited, the country still spreads across Indian Ocean quite a bit. Unzoom the map to see entire archipelago:

Maldives Islands

Maldives islands are grouped into Atolls. There are 26 Atolls in Maldives, each consisting of a group of islands. Most Atolls are known to general public by their English name, but in native Dhivehi language they are named differently. There are 20 administrative Atoll groups in the Maldives, 10 of which are open to tourism. The list of the Atolls is below and includes its English name and Dhivehi name in the brackets:

Lhaviyani (Miladhunmadulu Uthuruburi), Raa (Maalhosmadulu Uthuruburi), Baa (Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi), Kaafu (North and South Male Atoll), Alifu (Ari), Vaavu (Felidhu), Meemu (Mulak), Faafu (Nilandhe Atholhu Uthuruburi), Dhaalu (Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi), Seenu (Addu), Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Gnaviyani, Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Laamu, Nyavinani, Seenu, Shaviyani, and Thaa.

Aerial View of Ari Atoll, Maldives, Photo by shazwan, Flickr

Maldives Visa Requirements

Maldives are very welcoming of tourists (30% of country’s GDP comes from tourism) so everyone, regardless of which country issued their passport gets 30 day tourist visa on arrival. In order to get the visa, you must show you have enough money for the duration of your stay and a return ticket to take you out of the country. If you booked your vacation through a travel agent and have resort reservation, then you don’t need to prove you have sufficient funds. Otherwise, you will be required to have $50 per day plus $100 on top of it.

Maldives is a Muslim country. It is illegal to bring in pork and pornography. Make sure you don’t throw any of that in your luggage as it will be X-Rayed and could get you in trouble. On your way out, make sure you don’t have any sea shells or sand samples on you as exporting it is illegal.

Visa extension of up to 90 days total is possible and can be obtained from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Male. You may be asked to document where in Maldives you would be staying for 90 days.

Maldives - Islands of Paradise, Photo by Craig Grobler, Flickr

Getting to Maldives

The only way to Maldives is by plane. There are no boats that sail to Maldives and even once you have landed, you will be taken to your resort island by air taxi, rather than boat. Navigating among the reefs surrounding Maldives is risky and many boats and yachts saw their end trying to reach the islands. Furthermore, permits allowing foreign boats to sail to Maldives are so expensive you’re better off flying.

Male International Airport (IATA code is MLE) is on Hulhule Island which is the island located right next to the capital city of Male (as you can see on the map above).

Maldives Resorts

There are 93 resorts in Maldives. Hotels only exist in the capital Male. Larger islands have fewer resorts, but majority of resorts take up their own island so beach occupation is limited to resort guests. If you seek tranquility, the farther a resort is from Male, the less populated it will be, however regardless of which part of Maldives you find yourself in, beaches will not be overcrowded. You are in fact likely to find a beach where you are all alone, separated from everyone and everything else. It’s great for unwinding and having a little time for yourself. It’s also perfect for honeymooners.

Overwater bungalows are a popular means of lodging for resort tourists and while it has its charm and should be tried by anyone visiting Maldives, it gets difficult to handle during a longer stay. If you happen to have a stormy night while staying in a bungalow, the noise from waves crashing into the stilts will make it difficult to sleep. Bungalows are also often cramped closely next to each other which makes for challenging times especially if you’re a couple on honeymoon trying to have your moment.

Most resorts are on Kaafu Atoll, with Alifu Atoll being the second busiest.

<img src="http://www.vacationideas.me/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/overwater-bungalows-maldives.jpg" alt="Overwater Bungalows in Maldives, Photo by muha...
Maldives Weather

The weather in Maldives is tropical year round. Maldives are located around the equator in the Indian Ocean, providing it with climate with little temperature fluctuations. Regardless of when you visit Maldives, the temperature will likely remain within 24°C to 33°C range. Humidity is high, however ocean breezes move across the islands all the time making it more bearable as sweat gets washed away with breeze.

The highest recorded temperature in Maldives occurred in April and reached 37°C (99°F). The coldest recorded temperature occurred in January and reached 17°C (63°F).

Maldives – The Best Time to Visit

Rainy monsoon season in Maldives lasts from April to October. During that time it rains a lot, it’s windy and storms are frequent. The best time to visit Maldives would be in March, when average temperatures reach enjoyable 29°C (85°F) yet participation is low. February is the month with least precipitation, but while temperature remains tropical, it gets cold at times so on occasion you’d have to wear long sleeve shirts and may find the ocean water cold from the beginning.

Scuba Diving in Maldives

Endless coral reefs surrounding Maldive atolls are hundreds of kilometres away from highly populated, industrialized areas which makes for clear water and abundant sea life – perfect conditions for scuba diving. While scuba diving in Maldives is significantly costlier than in coastal areas of mainland Asia, the gear rented is in excellent condition and well maintained. Safety standards are strictly adhered to and guides are knowledgeable and friendly. You’d miss out a lot if you didn’t go under water on your vacation in Maldives.

Swimming with Whale Sharks in Maldives, Photo: festeban, Flickr

Honeymoon in Maldives

I’ve mentioned it a few times before already – Maldives is a perfect destination for honeymooners. With their tranquil, desolate resorts that often take up one small island, peaceful and enjoyable honeymoon is pretty much guaranteed. This is where I’m going to go on my honeymoon, if I ever find a lady crazy enough to marry me.

<img src="http://www.vacationideas.me/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/honeymoon-maldives-dolphins.jpg" alt="Newlywed Couple on a Honeymoon in Maldives Took Dolphin Cruise, Photo: muha...
Maldives – Safety for Visitors

Maldives went through rather turbulent times in recent past, but it seems that it’s all a thing of the past now. During the rule of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, there was questionable democracy in Maldives with rigged elections and persecution of dissidents. The iron fist ruler got himself re-elected five time in a row and sent those who would question or oppose his rule to jail. After international pressure and two years of violent riots, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was defeated in what appears as Maldive’s first democratic election. This took place in October of 2008. Newly elected president Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed took charge of the country which relieved political tension and riots have not occurred since.

Scuba-Diver Encounters Huge Jellyfish in Maldives, Photo: stompy, Flickr

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada advises all visitors to exercise high degree of caution when visiting Maldives stating that the situation could deteriorate anytime and do it rapidly. Canadian government also warns people traveling to Maldives that petty crime is high and one should maintain awareness of their surrounding and secure their valuables at all times.

US Department of State cautions travellers to Maldives to not engage in any political protests or other such activity during their stay on the island. US government also highlights the incident from 2007 when 12 foreign tourists were wounded in a bomb blast caused by an IED (improvised explosive device).

Sea Turtle Swimming in Clear Waters of Maldives, Photo: eNil, Flickr

As a conclusion – compared to nearby Sri Lanka or India, Maldives is likely much safer in overall regard. Most tourists visiting Maldives stay on resort islands where no one, but resort visitors and workers go, separating them safely from potential problems. However backpackers and individual travellers should exercise caution and keep it low profile. Secure your valuables and don’t display signs of affluence.

Maldives Video

Following video is a great introduction to Maldives with beautiful images of all that the islands have to offer:

And another video from Maldives. This one is not narrated. It’s just pure enjoyment:

Maldives is one of those “must visit before you die” destinations. It’s a whole different world. The islands are small and vastly flat, ocean water is crystal clean and sea life abundant. It’s a heaven on Earth or a paradise if you will. Let’s hope that extremisms will not turn it into a scary place. Maldives is a luxury destination so travelers on a budget may need to compromise but it can be done. Real adventurers may not find Maldives interesting because of its laid back lifestyle and repeated appearance. It’s perfect for those seeking tranquility, but if you like life on the move, you better look elsewhere. It’s worth a visit never the less. Even if just for a brief period of time.

Mount Roraima is a tepui tabletop mountain that stands right on the junction of three South American countries: Guyana, Venezuela and Brazil. The borders of all these countries meet right on top of Mount Roraima. Flat, tabletop like summit of Mount Roraima is 31 kilometres square in size (huge). The vertical sides of Mount Roraima are 400 meters tall. Thanks to its super old age and prehistoric feel, Mount Roraima served as an inspiration for “The Lost World” – the 1912 novel by Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about interactions between dinosaurs and people. Jurassic Park movie which was based on The Lost World novel is not the only Hollywood production inspired by Mount Roraima. The 2009 Pixar animated feature titled “Up” also took ideas from this prehistoric formation. Mount Roraima is also known by its Portuguese name Monte Roraima (used in Brazil), or Spanish mane Cerro Roraima (used in Venezuela). English is the official language of Guyana so they call it Mount Roraima there. Because Mount Roraima is a tabletop mountain natively known as tepui, there is yet another name used for this formation – Roraima Tepui.

Mount Roraima in Guyana, Venezuela and Brazil, Photo: Yosemite, Wikipedia

Mount Roraima Location on a Map

As it was mentioned above, Mount Roraima is located right on the junction of three borders – Guyana, Venezuela and Brazil. That means that once you have climbed on top of Mount Roraima, you will be able to stand in three countries at the same time. The exact coordinates of the triple border are: 5°12’08N, 60°44’07W.

Mount Roraima is part of The Guiana Shield the highlands of which are known for being the home to some of world’s most spectacular waterfalls, including Kaieteur Falls in Guyana and Angel Falls in Venezuela which both have been previously described on Vacation Ideas website, because I believe they are some of world’s finest spots that should be on everyone’s “must visit before I die list”.

You can see the location of Mount Roraima on an interactive, navigable map below:

Mount Roraima Weather

As you can see from the map above, when satellite pictures of Mount Roraima were taken, it was engulfed in clouds. This is not unusual by any means as the weather patterns follow the same trends on almost daily basis. Mount Roraima is surrounded by thick rainforest. Tropical heat of this part of the world causes the moisture from the rainforest to raise and condense over the mountain as heavy clouds. As a result, Mount Roraima is almost always in clouds and it rains there pretty much every day. This creates some visual spectacles as water from the flat top of Mount Roraima makes its way down in spectacular, single drop waterfalls that count as some of the tallest in the world.

How to Get to Mount Roraima

The best starting point for tours to Mount Roraima is Venezuelan town of Santa Elena de Uairén. The town is right by the border with Brazil and several tour companies organize tours to Mount Roraima from there. You can get to Santa Elena de Uairén by plane from Caracas. Helicopter tours for those who are not fit enough to climb the natural staircase for a day are also available from Santa Elena de Uairén.

Another option is to get to Paraitepui village where Pemon Indians can be hired as guides.

On Top of Monte Roraima, Photo: Simon Booth, Flickr

Tepui Tabletop Mountains

Tepui are fascinating formations that are more than just mountains. Tepuis are the king of the plateau. Geologists have been maintaining that Tepui Tabletop Mountains such as Mount Roraima are the oldest geological formations on Earth, dating back to Precambrian era, more than 2 billion years ago.

In the language of the Pemon, people native to La Gran Sabana, Tepui means “house of the gods”. While there are several Tepui Tabletop Mountains individually scattered across Pakaraima – tepui plateau in South America, Mount Roraima is the highest, the most famous and the most notable one. Venezuela can boast with the largest number of Tepui Tabletop Mountains, but since Mount Roraima reaches into Guyana, Venezuela and Brazil, each of these three countries can brag about being a home to world’s most famous tepui.

Steep Cliffs of Mount Roraima, Photo: Jeff Johnson, Wikipedia

Mount Roraima Myths and Legends

First written mention about Mount Roraima was made in 1596 by English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, but native Pemon Indians knew about the mountain for centuries prior. According to their myths and legends, what we now know as Mount Roraima was once a giant tree that once held all the fruits and vegetables in the world. At some point, one of Pemon ancestors knocked the tree down the crashing of which caused immense flood. Mount Roraima as we know it today is the stump of that gianormous tree.

Mount Roraima Height

To talk about Mount Roraima height, we have to consider two factors. One is the height of the mountain above sea level. In this case, the Mount Roraima height is 2810 meters or 9219 feet. The height range fluctuate from one point to another between 2810 to 2851 meters above sea level. This is quite high altitude so no matter what time of year, when you are on top of the mountain, it is going to be fairly cold up there. The highest peak of Mount Roraima which reaches the height of 2810m is on Venezuelan part of the tabletop and is called Maverick Rock. When it comes to height of Mount Roraima from the bottom of the plateau, it averages to about 400 meters.

Mount Roraima is the highest point in Guyana. Brazil and Venezuela both have peaks that are higher than that elsewhere in the country.

Mount Roraima Treks

The first person to take a trek up on top of Mount Roraima was Sir Everard im Thurn in December of 1884. To climb up on top of Mount Roraima is near impossible because of its endless and steep sides, but Sir Everard im Thurn found slightly sloped area covered with trees which allowed him to trek the mountain all the way to its massive top. Trekkers taking tours to Mount Roraima use the same route Sir Everard im Thurn took more than a hundred years ago. This hike is on Gran Sabana side of the mountain in Venezuela.

Once you make it on top, you should try to get to the junction of all three borders. This point is marked by a concrete cairn, but keep in mind that the top of Mount Roraima is 31 square kilometres in size (5 miles across). Depending on where you are, you could be several kilometres away from it, which means it could take you hours to get to the point.

This is the Strip on the Side of Monte Roraima that Creates a Natural Staircase and the Only Way Up, Photo: One Off Man Mental, Flickr

Mount Roraima Tours

There are several companies offering tours to Mount Roraima, mostly in Brazil and Venezuela as impenetrable jungle on Guyana’s side makes for challenging access from this country. As it goes with any tour company, enquire with other tourists before you make a booking and try to agree on written contract before you pay the money. Mount Roraima is a large mountain. It’s massive. It takes 2.5 days to get on top.

Most companies organize 6 day tours. After 2.5 day ascend, you would spend 1.5 days camping on top of the mountain and then take 2 days to descend the mountain. Because it’s quite an adventure, it is essential to make sure you are going to good tour company. Tents must be of decent quality and reasonably reliable. all other equipment, such as stoves should also be operational and clean. It’s also essential to enquire about food supplies so you don’t spend your 6 day tour hungry. At the time of this post, Backpackers Tours was a recommended company, but things change quickly. Try to track down backpackers who took tours and ask them about their experience. This is the best way to avoid shady tour companies and pick a good in at this given time.

Sunset at Monte Roraima, Photo: slash__, Flickr

Mount Roraima Video

The video below is form the BBC series about plants surviving in extreme conditions. It features nice aerial photography of Mount Roraima, even though it mostly focuses on incredible flora found on the hostile mountain. In order for the plants to adapt to the life on the mountain that is continuously being washed off by flowing water which takes away all nutrients, the plants turned carnivorous and feel themselves by eating insects. This video us a nice documentary of all this.

The intriguing nature of the world’s oldest geological formation which is Mount Roraima makes all visitors feel as if they’d stepped back in time a few million years. 2 billion year old caves have been recently discovered on the Roraima formation. All of this truly make for an unforgettable adventure that would be savoured by any tourist. There are some of world’s most spectacular spots on the Guiana Shield that every avid explorer should look deeply into. I have yet to meet one person who would not have been completely blown away after visiting this area. Yet it is often missed by many. It’s truly ironic how biggest gems are left for few to discover.

Kjeragbolten is the name of a massive bounder that’s wedged and completely stuck between the walls of two steep cliffs in Kjerag Mountains, Norway. Despite its spectacularly crazy visual appeal, Kjeragbolten is surprisingly easy to walk onto and pose for a photo. No special rock climbing skills are required, you don’t even need any special equipment. Just need a pair of fit legs to get you up on top of Kjerag Mountains and you’re set for a photo opportunity that will leave your relatives and friends in awe.

Fearless Sheep on Top of Kjeragbolten in Norway, Photo: 7ty9, Flickr

Kjeragbolten Location on a Map

Kjerag Mountain range stretches along Lysefjorden, in Forsand municipality of Rogaland, Norway. Lysefjorden is the same Norwegian fjord that’s overlooked by magnificent Preikestolen Pulpit Rock. Only Kjeragbolten is on the opposite end of Lysefjorden from Preikestolen. The highest point of Kjerag Mountains reaches up to 1100 meters above sea level and given that you can see the sea from most parts of Kjerag, that’s quite a drop down. The drop by Kjeragbolten is 982 meters long and is the most popular and most visited site of Kjerag Mountains. This is mostly due to dazzling visual appeal of the Kjeragbolten rock and as you look at the pictures, it is hard to disagree. You can see exact location of Kjeragbolten on an interactive and navigable map below:

How to Get to Kjeragbolten

Stavanger should be your starting point as it’s the closest bigger town to Lysefjorden. You can rent a car which will give you immense freedom and control over your time, but car rentals in Norway are not particularly cheap and parking is definitely not either. You can expect to pay 80 Norwegian Krone for parking at the foot of Kjerag Mountains, which is enough to pay for a boat ride from Stavenger across Lysefjorden and for the bus ride from the docks to the parking lot. However if you do decide to drive in a rented car, you will be rewarded with views of the scenery that you wouldn’t get a chance to see from a boat.

The road from Stavanger around the mountains to Kjeragbolten is about 130 km long so count with about 1.5 – 2 hours of driving. Start by taking route E39 out of Stavanger and head for Ålgård. After passing Ålgård turn left to Sirdalen via Oltedal, Dirdal and Byrkjedal (route 43). The toll station at Øvstabø will likely let you go if you are a tourist (Norway is very tourist friendly country). Follow by turning left for Sinnes, pass Fidjeland and turn left again for Lysebotn. Enjoy the scenic ride which will take you through the Kjerag Mountains that reaches 932 meters elevation at one point. Even if it’s summer down at the Lysefjord, you are likely to find snow lining up the road at this elevation. Keep in mind that due to undrivable conditions, this road is closed for the winter (from October to May).

If you’re not going by rental car, you can jump on a ferry leaving Stavanger for Lysebotn. Bus service and taxi are synchronized with ferry schedules and will take you to Øygardsstøl. You can recharge your fluid at a food shop there, but you had best packed up extra water to drink before hand as it gets more expensive the further up the mountain you get.

View of Lysefjord from the Perspective of a Person Standing on Top of Kjeragbolten, Photo: Kjwathne, Wikipedia

Hiking Trail to Kjeragbolten

Hiking trail leading to Kjeragbolten is longer than the one leading to Preikestolen, however despite higher physical demands, many tourists opt for trip to Kjeragbolten instead of Preikestolen which is rather overcrowded these days. Unlike hiking trail to Preikestolen which goes straight up, the trail up to Kjeragbolten alternates. You go up for a while, then down, then up again and down again before final climb up. Kjeragbolten is at 500 meters elevation difference from the Øygardsstøl parking lot and the trail length is 6 kilometres. It will take you 2 hours to get there if you are in good physical shape. Take more hours into account if you need to take more frequent breaks or set slower pace, especially up steep hills.

Steep Drop Goes Down 1000 Meters from the Edge of Kjerag, Photo: Adam Blicharski, Flickr

You will need proper trekking shoes and bring an extra jacket. It may feel warm down in Stavanger, but once you get thousand meters higher, the difference in temperature is noticeable. You could feel cold even during summer months. And keep yourself hydrated. Drinking lots of water is absolutely essential on challenging hikes like the one to Kjeragbolten.

The trail is really steep at one point and requires climbing. Chains are provided to help you hoist yourself up, but be aware that some physical fitness and strength is required.

Standing on Top of Kjeragbolten, Photo: epicxero, Flickr

Kjeragbolten Fall

The boulder of Kjeragbolten is not above the fjord and while climbing on it is not all that difficult, the fall from it would hurt. The drop off overlooking Lysefjorden is just next to it. That’s where you will get to see the crevasse that’s 982 meters above the ocean below. The feeling of standing so far above the surface is impossible to describe ad must be experienced. The views are beyond spectacular and again – resemble those of being on top of the world. If you happen to fall from there, you’d be falling to certain death. Be extremely careful as you’re approaching the edge.

Kjerag Base Jumping

Thanks to its steep vertical hills, the Kjerag Mountain range is very popular with BASE jumpers. Those are the guys who have the balls of steel and are not afraid to jump off the cliff. To take the fall is the purpose in case of BASE jumpers. If you visit Kjeragbolten in main tourist season, you will likely see BASE jumpers at Kjeragbolten. Such encounter will give you the opportunity to film a video such as the one below. Even watching someone jump off a cliff 1 kilometres above the sea below is gut wrenching. The BASE jumping enthusiasts enjoy it immensely. Even though there have been some accidents, including deaths involved with BASE jumpers, it is still legal to sky dive off of Kjerag Mountain cliffs according to the laws of Norway.

Standing Atop of Kjeragbolten for Pictures

Remember how I mentioned above that it is easy to walk up on Kjeragbolten and pose for envy inducing pictures? Well, while it is true, keep in mind that you will still have the view of Lysefjord in your peripheral vision, with surface of the water 1000 meters below your feet. No matter how well balanced you are, you will find your feet going weak as you attempt to step on the boulder that somehow got itself jammed between the walls of the crack. Keep your balance and take it slow. And don’t worry if you start acting like frightened chicken. Even the biggest jocks go weak as they put their foot on Kjeragbolten. The feeling of having been there once you get off is one you will never forget. The adrenaline rush is beyond words. This type of experience is one of those that money can’t buy.

<img src="http://www.vacationideas.me/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/dare-kjerag-fall-500x746.jpg" alt="Would You Dare?
Kjeragbolten Video

The video below demonstrated spectacular views offered to those who dare to climb up to Kjeragbolten. Video is available in HD quality.

Kjeragbolten is 5 square meters wide on top offering enough space for a visitor to comfortable get on and off of it. The name of Kjeragbolten loosely translates in Kjerag Boulder or Kjerag Bolt. Thanks to the fact that a longer and more difficult hike is required to reach Kjeragbolten, the place is not as overrun with tourists as nearby Preikestolen, which is on the opposite side of Lysefjord. The adrenaline rush and spectacular views offered to those who took a challenge and climbed up on top of Kjeragbolten will stay with them a lifetime. The picture opportunities are unrivalled. There will hardly be any other place in the world you could visit from where a picture of you would be envied by your peers as much as the one from Kjeragbolten. Just sensational.
